Our President's Message

Happy Autumn EBC! The first day of Fall has arrived…too bad someone forgot to tell Mother Nature! We have had 95 degree temps for the last five days…..but weather does not stop EBC riders and all our many rides went off as planned.

This month I wanted to say something about the diversity of The Elmhurst Bike Club. We have really developed into so much more than just folks riding bikes although we do thousands of bike rides. The bike rides themselves are so diverse, we have blazing fast rides, slower easy rides, path rides, randonneuring, night rides, mountain bike rides, rides to eat, rides to breweries etc., etc. Petra leads rides to a multitude of very interesting locations like the one to the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center. Lynn Korff leads great rides in Wisconsin like her Cream City 2017 CCCC in Waterford. Dawn Maxwell has the Lakefront rides down to a science and they are so festive! Jeff Wincentsen leads twisty rides all throughout the suburbs and Chicago. I could go on and on….. But they would not fit in this article.

EBC is not limited to bike rides though…far from it. We have an great hiking program with hikes all over the country, snowshoeing, canoeing, cross country skiing, kayaking, running, and roller skating. The diversity of these events means there is always something for everyone no matter what your outdoor interests might be.

We also are an advocacy club that supports a plethora of cycling organizations such as Ride Illinois, League of American Bicyclists, etc. We provide support for bike races that donate to charity plus our members bike marshal a whole calendar of running races, we teach bike safety to children, run cleanup days on local bike paths and so much more. I am proud to be President of such a giving and diverse Bike Club.

I look forward to seeing you on the road or trail,
George Pastorino
President

Grafton, WI

by Betty Bond

Lynn Korff has developed into a super ride leader and can handle adverse riding conditions like a pro. These past two days (August 3rd and 4th) are a testament to that fact. Linnea, Cheri, Dawn, David, Coleen, Judy, and Betty really appreciated her skills while we were up in Grafton, WI. To begin with, it was raining when we were about to begin our ride on Thursday at 9 a.m. ...we waited for the downpours to subside and finally were able to ride at 11:30. Comfort Inn was glad to see us on our way as while in the lobby we were having the usual EBC good time, talking, laughing and carrying on. The ride to Milwaukee on the Ozaukee Interurban and Oak Leaf Trail was very enjoyable, passing through the beautiful Wisconsin countryside. We rode along the lakefront for a time and arrived at our restaurant stop just as it began raining again. We thought we were so lucky only to come out after the downpour to find all of our backpacks, bike bags, etc. drenched. We then headed out of Milwaukee and it started raining again with a vengeance. We put on our various rain gear and rode even though we could hardly see. We did stop at a little place that had an overhang that protected us for a time. Then we were off again. This was all worthwhile when we got to Cedarburg for homemade ice cream at Ashley's. We were amazed that the sun came out at that time...and we were almost dry when we arrived back at the Comfort Inn. Happy Hour was late this day due to the late start...but so very enjoyable.

Too much fun! Are they all wearing the same top?

The Ladies Salute

Friday turned out to be quite cold. In the 50's. So, with exchanged and borrowed shirts and jackets (Linnea got the award for the most layers and clothes worn) we ventured out again on the Interurban Trail heading north for Oostburg. And it rained again... After 15 miles we decided it wasn't much fun being cold and wet...so we turned around and had lunch at New Port Shores in Port Washington. They put us in a back room alone. I do believe that Comfort Inn phoned them to tell them of our robust conversations. After a great lunch we climbed onto the bikes and rode back to our vehicles at Comfort Inn where many of us changed out of our wet clothes into something dry for the ride home.

In spite of the rain and cold we had a wonderful time and not one complaint was heard. Lynn kept the group together very well and did a fantastic job of heading into the strong winds of 20+ mph on Friday. Judy worked as our sweep and did a great job as well.

My thanks go out to Lynn and all of the great riders/friends.

Club Jersey Order Window Closing October 5th

I am happy to report that we are up to 27 items ordered and have met the minimum requirement plus our first price break. Remember, the more we order the lower the price (25, 50 and 100 pieces ordered gives us another price break).

Final order date will be October 5, 2017, with a delivery in November around the 22nd. Here is the link to Voler: http://www.voler.com/custom/ordering/li/18745

Please note: the colors that appear on your computer are not the colors for the new jersey.  The colors will be the same colors we have used for the other EBC jerseys.  For example, the green on my computer shows up as khaki which is not the true green color that will be on the final product.

Thank you for your interest,
Susan & Armie

Ride to the Quilt Show

by Nancy Shack

Mary Jo Bolan led a lovely ride to the Woodridge location of the quilt show that Mary Lee St. Aubin told us about, Sunday, September 17. Mary Lee's passion is quilting and her quilts are exquisite. This photo shows our group with Mary Lee, standing in front of one of the quilts that she had on display. (Hers is the one on the right.)

Thanks MJ and ML for a special day.

Project Mobility "Everybody Rides" Ride

by George Pastorino

Club sponsor and owner of Project Mobility put on a great ride today (Sunday, September 24). All funds go toward the purchase of specially adapted bicycles for disabled children and Wounded Warriors. Hal is one of the finest men that I have ever met and his organization is stellar. Read about them here:  https://www.projectmobility.org/

The 62 mile route was awesome and the 92 degree heat was delightful. It was all low traffic country roads and beautiful scenery.  It was a great day to be riding and helping others.....

Watch these 2 Videos to get a feel of the great things Project Mobility does...this first one is of Hal giving away 3 bikes today :    Project Mobility Bike Giveaway Today    and this young boy riding his new specially adapted Trike:    Child riding his Project Mobility donated Bike    Heart warming for sure :)

Here is video of the rest stop today :  Project Mobility Rest Stop

And Finally.....EBC tandems on the ride:  EBC Tandems today

Apple Cider Century Pre-ride

by Lynn Korff

Today, Saturday, September 23, there were 9 EBC members who did not let the 90+ degree weather stop the ride. After the ride we had ice cream at the ice cream social and then gathered at Marge's for dinner. A good time was had by all.
