Our President's Message

Greetings EBC Members!

April has arrived and the riding season will begin in earnest. If you have not had your bikes tuned up, consider taking them to one of our sponsors. We have a bunch of great rides already on the Schedule. Ron Richards will start his great Tuesday/Thursday ride series. Dawn Maxwell will offer her annual and very popular Super Dawg/Botanical Garden excursion. Pravin’s hill training rides will continue and there will be a lot more as the month unfolds. It does not matter what ride you choose as long as you choose one and get out!

We will also offer an opportunity to give back to the community with our annual cleanup of the Prairie Path on Saturday, April 8, 2017. Marge Ricke organizes this every year and I would be very pleased to see a good turnout. The Elmhurst Bike Club does a lot of advocacy and we want to be known for doing more than just pedaling a bike. There will be rides after the cleanup and the club will buy everyone ice cream as well.

We are very pleased to have Chad Denton from Garmin as our featured speaker at our April 13, club meeting. He will show us the latest Garmin products. Also speaking will be Shannon Feeney from MS, she will be speaking about the MS ride that is upcoming on June 10th. Our meetings are at the Elmhurst Community Bank, 330 W. Butterfield Road, Elmhurst, IL (junction of Butterfield & Spring Road.) All members and guests are encouraged to attend to keep up with club happenings and to socialize with your fellow members.

Finally, please consider supporting our Elmhurst Bike Club charity rides. Fight for Air is led by Linnea M. Myers and The MS ride is organized by Kelli Morgan. Please consider joining these teams or donating to these fine causes at the links here: EBC Fight for Air Ride or EBC MS Ride

That’s all for now, I look forward to seeing you on the road or trail.

Wheeling Wheelmen St. Patrick's Day Ride

by Chuck Dean

Most of us on the St. Patrick’s Day ride on Sunday, March 19, seem to think that it was two years ago when we last fielded an EBC team to this Wheeling Wheelmen event. So, we might have enjoyed the ride a little more than normal for having missed last year’s event. While the day started out chilly, there was not a cloud in the sky, the winds were light, and it warmed up quickly.

Led by John Loesch in a wonderful green hat that fit over his helmet, the group did the 20-mile loop first which brought us back to Wauconda H.S. Several other EBCer’s were costumed but there was no agreement as to whether it was Tom Naughton or Dawn Maxwell who displayed the green tutu to its best advantage. After the first loop, snacks and hot coffee and a rock & roll band recharged everyone, and we were soon on the second slightly shorter loop. The riders were glad to be joined by Karim Mouline who arrived by bicycle as we launched loop 2. George and Pussanee on a tandem and Karim must have been disappointed that the second loop was shorter, so, near the end of the ride they rode off the front, missed a turn sign, and added an extra 4 miles before getting back to the high school.

A bunch of us rendezvoused at Middleton’s on Main (Main Street, Wauconda) to enjoy a lunch while hoisting a few. It was a terrific day for a ride.

EBC Ride Leaders Facilitate Donation to Project Mobility

by Chuck Dean

As noted in the January, 2017 Board Minutes, some members who earned a Ride Leader reward for 2016, chose to turn this reward into a good cause donation. Pictured below, George Pastorino tenders a $250 donation to Project Mobility. That is Hal Honeyman accepting the check at the Bike Rack, one of our club sponsors.

George reported this event earlier in March on the list server (see March 17 posting). You can read more about Project Mobility here: https://www.projectmobility.org/

EBCers: What a great group of people!

  6. Sponsorship: 7 of 10 sponsors have re-signed up with EBC. The 3 who have not signed up cited various reasons for not renewing.

  7. Publicity: Kelli Morgan and Bill Bonner want to raise awareness of EBC in our communities. Creating social media such as an informational Facebook page for the public, separate from the EBC closed FB page. This is a page where content can be controlled and monitored before public comment can be added. Information can be on biking events, safety tips, cycling stories, and other communications that encourage the spirit of cycling in our communities. A desire to ask local newspapers for submitting weekly bicycle articles has been proposed. A suggestion was made to create an EBC poster to put in some of the coffee shops we frequent.

  8. The next Board meeting will be on Thursday, April 13, 2017, at 6:15 p.m. at The Community Bank of Elmhurst.

Respectfully submitted,

  2. Vice-president/Ride Captain: There has been some unsafe riding recently observed, so members not riding safely should be called out as they are riding.
