Happy Spring Everyone!

March marks the onset of spring, although February was warmer than most Aprils and we had a lot of members out riding in the warm temps. All the Invitational rides will be starting up soon beginning with The Wheeling Wheelmen St. Patrick's Day Ride led by John Loesch. Please take the time to review all the Illinois Invitational rides on Mike Bentley’s site here: http://www.mikebentley.com/bike/ilrides.htm    We are very pleased to have Mike as our featured speaker at our next club meeting on March 9th. It is sure to be very informative. Many thanks to Vince Gatto for organizing this.

Pravin Patel will be leading a series of hill training rides again this year, so if getting better on hills is one of your goals, please consider attending these as Pravin does a wonderful job leading them.

The mountain bike trails at Palos are wet this time of year, so we ask that you do not ride them as that causes environmental damage that is difficult and time-consuming to fix. We want to lead by example and only ride while the trails are dry and firm. Waterfall Glen is a good option to ride while the single track is wet.

This will be EBC’s 40th Anniversary and Kim Messina is Chair of the Committee that is organizing events to commemorate this milestone. Please contact her if you have any ideas or would like to help out.

Have a great March riding at the speed of fun and I will see you on the road or trail.

Ironwood Ski Trip – February 6-9, 2017

by Nancy Allured

It’s the love for snow that draws a group of EBC members to Ironwood, MI, each year. 18 years to be exact! With not a speck of snow on the ground here in Illinois, the draw was particularly strong this year. In Ironwood, it was gorgeous, it was breathtaking and it was skiable. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, more snow. Nine inches fell on Tuesday as some skied and some took a snow shoe hike. Kim Messina organized the snowshoe hike/tour at Bessemer Bluffs led by local guide, Star. It was awesome with the snow falling throughout the hike.

ABR, the ultimate cross country ski destination, is always the highlight of the trip. The 73 km of trails for classic and skate skiing are impeccable. We even get to visit the EBC bench along the Jack Pine ski trail.

Longtime members and now from Traverse City, Sharon and George Hermach, joined us for a fun reunion. George led a ski lesson on Monday to help some of us brush up on our skills.

Kim Messina and George Hardwich did a great job organizing the trip again this year. Lots of skiing and snow shoeing for all of us. And you can’t forget the happy hours, good dinners and games in the lobby after dinner.

All of us enjoyed the great winter fun and camaraderie of our EBC group. Come join us next year.

Alabama Vacation Ride with GPS (RWGPS)

by Tom Preston

Two weeks before our February Get Away, I clicked on the link on our Elmhurst Bicycle Club homepage “How to get RWGPS.” Before doing anything, I sent an email to Petra Lynn Hoffman, our RWGPS Administrator. Soon I was able to search for rides in and around Mobile and Gulf Shores, Alabama. We don’t have a smartphone, so I printed PDF maps and cue sheets for the rides I thought we’d enjoy. Worked great. One of the rides we chose started in the parking lot of a place called Tacky Jack’s. Turns out Tacky Jack’s owner is a bicycle enthusiast. The restaurant hosts many bike events every year. Here is a picture our waiter, John, took of us after our delicious lunch and before we started our tandem ride.

And, yes, we did sign our names and date on some brightly colored tape to leave on the wall near our table where Ginny enjoyed blackened tilapia and I enjoyed shrimp and grits. Yum, Yum.

The Ride with GPS route took us out to a beautiful multi-sport recreation area, then on to beautiful trails to Gulf State Park, and then along West Beach Boulevard parallel to the shore and all the beach front homes, restaurants, and hotels. Thank you Elmhurst Bicycle Club for providing RWGPS to us members. And, thank you, Petra, for being our RWGPS Administrator. Without Ride with GPS we never would have found Tacky Jack’s Restaurant or a wonderful route.

Picnic Reminder - Save The Date

by Chuck Dean

Photo sample Joanne Dezur has already been planning and organizing our annual EBC picnic. This year it will be held on Saturday, August 19. Of course there will be a lot more details as we move into the summer. But with this note, you can "save the date."

Pravin's Rollers Ride - I/55 Frontage Roads, February 12th

The turnout for Pravin's ride was much bigger than what is suggested by this picture, but a bunch of riders had already left by the time this picture was taken. That is Pravin, 3rd from left. How about those smiling faces?
